Day 1.  Sat Feb 18

Arrive at the Cancun airport. Upon arrival transfer by private vehicle to our beachfront hotel, Hotel Alaya in Tulum, about a 1.5 hour ride from Cancun. Relax, unpack, and stroll on the beach before enjoying appetizers and dinner with a view of the sea. For our tour group, we have 6 double occupancy rooms closest to the ocean reserved for our group. Each room boasts an ocean view, private bathrooms, beautiful decor and a balcony/patio area.  One of the newer hotels in Tulum, it has only 18 guest rooms, and also features air conditioning, wifi, a garden and a private beach!

Day 2. Sun Feb 19

Wake up to the ocean breeze, and enjoy breakfast and coffee by the beach. Today we’ll stretch our legs and take in the sights around Tulum. Tulum is most known for its beaches and ruins, so we’ll take in both, with an outing to the Tulum Ruins after breakfast. Grab lunch at your leisure and then perhaps take a rest or swim back at the hotel or explore the city on your own. Later we’ll enjoy some of the area’s locally sourced sea and land to table cuisine at a local restaurant, before returning to the hotel for drinks or a night time swim.

Day 3. Mon Feb 20

After our a final breakfast at our beachfront hotel, we’ll pack up and get ready for a hands-on cooking demo at Restaurare, one of the hottest restaurants in Tulum. Restaurare offers vegan cuisine based on the traditional foods of the area, supports local products and farmers, all served with love in Tulum’s jungle, just a few steps from the beach. After enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of our labor we head in a private van to Valladolid, a colonial city about 1.5 hours inland from Tulum. Valladolid is rich in Mayan culture, and we will enjoy dinner before relaxing in a hammock at our guesthouse or strolling around the town square. Casa Hamaca features a beautifully restored hacienda-style main building reflects Colonial design and is filled with many Mayan artifacts and Yucatan-themed murals. It is surrounded by lush gardens, an expansive veranda, a pool, and plenty of places to relax. Indulge in a relaxation massage or facial in your room! Dinner in Valladolid.

Day 4 Tues Feb 21

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at our guesthouse we will take a guided outing to the local market where we will select items for our Mayan cooking class! Our Mayan instructors will offer guidance as we learn to make local specialties such as panuchos and salbutes. In the afternoon, we will take a tour of a local Apiary where honey is made by the sacred Yucatecan honey bees. We will visit the meliponary ( the meliponas are a kind of bee sacred to the Mayan people), a bee museum and enjoy samples of typical sweets made with the honey. You will have a chance to purchase some to take home. After that you may want to explore Casa Venados a premier private home that holds  the largest museum quality collection of Mexican folk art in private hands. As evening sets in, sit on the square with the locals, check out a nearby restaurant  or just relax on the veranda of the hotel with a drink.

Day 5 Wed. Feb 22

Enjoy a delicious homemade breakfast at our hotel and pack up before heading to the ruins of Ek Balam, some of the best preserved ruins in the Yucatan! You can still climb up the ruins to explore the unique limestone carvings. We’ll visit the spectacular Ek Balam cenote and take a dip in the cool clear water. We’ll grab a quick lunch before departing for our island paradise, about a 3 hour trip including a ferry ride from Cancun to the island. Here we will enjoy 4 nights in Vista de la Luz, a villa that overlooks the stunning emerald waters of Cancun Bay and offers spectacular panoramas from every vantage point, an infinity pool and a private dock. Upon arriving at our private luxury home in Isla Mujeres, we will enjoy a catered dinner from Chef Lori Dumm who has successfully operated 4 restaurants on the island, combining Mayan and Caribbean flavors with global influences.

 Day 6 Thursday Feb 23

Ahhh, paradise! Enjoy a private yoga class overlooking the vast sea, and a delicious breakfast prepared by local chefs. Yoga instructor Meg DeClerck lives on Isla Mujeres and has been certified since 2004, Meg has completed courses and received certifications in Holistic Himalayan Yoga, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Meditation and Sound Healing. Later, we will head down to the beach for an ocean side cooking class. We will learn to make traditional seafood dishes, such as ceviche and a Mayan dish of grilled fish marinated in achiote and citrus called Tikin-Xic (Tix-n-Chix).

Day 7 Friday feb 24

Enjoy yoga and breakfast from the veranda of our spectacular home and then enjoy a free day! Perhaps indulge in a spa treatment on the beach, chill by the infinity pool, take a guided fishing trip or go snorkeling! We’ll rendevouz in the evening to enjoy a specially crafted dinner at vegan restaurant Chaya & Cacao.  After dinner we’ll be ready for a Mescal tasting and history class - with plenty of samples!

Day 8 Sat 25

It’s Carnival on Isla! After breakfast and yoga, we’ll head to town to explore the market and watch the cultural celebration of dancers which is lively, but not too crowded. We’ll join the action and celebrate a great last day with a street food crawl, enjoying tacos, elote, churros and more!

 Day 9 Sunday 26

An early morning yoga class will start the day right, followed by a delicious breakfast. Take a final stroll on the beach, a dip in the pool or just gaze at the sea before heading by ferry to Cancun for your departing flight.

Deposits/Payments: Cost is $2935/person double occupancy. To hold your spot in the tour a $500 deposit is required. This can be payed by check or Paypal (incurs fees) and mailed to the address below. Any single supplement charge, or room upgrade (first come first serve) should also be included with the deposit. Within 60 days of your deposit, or 60 days before the tour (whichever is sooner) half of the total for the tour is due. You will get an email reminder when payment is due.

Final payment is due 2 weeks before the course/tour in US dollars.

Tour Policies and Procedures

Cancellation and Refund

If Madison Eats Food Tours cancels the tour, all fees paid to Madison Eats will be refunded. We strongly encourage trip insurance in case of unforeseen events that result in cancellation of your trip.

Cancellations by Guest

If the guest cancels their registration for the course, up to 60 days in advance, they will receive a partial refund of $250 of the $500 deposit. Single supplements paid are fully refundable, if applicable.

Cancellation by guest 59 days to 30 days prior to the course, a refund of fifty percent of the total price paid will be given. Single supplement will be returned in full, if applicable.

Cancellation by guest anytime between 29 days through the first day of the course: no refund will be given unless the space is sold to another participant. If the space is filled, a refund of fifty percent of the total fees paid will be refunded, once we have confirmed another participant to fill the space.  Single supplement will be returned in full, if applicable.

Any changes in itinerary on guests behalf result in a forfeit of included services and activities.
